Use of temephos larvicide in solid form for the control of onchocerciasis in Guatemala.

چکیده
Three onchocerciasis vectors are recognized in Guatemala: Simulium ochraceum, Simulium metallicurn, and Simulium callidum (1); but the most important species is S. ochraceum. Its larvae generally breed in streams that carry a small volume of water and run under a canopy of dense vegetation, but that move swiftly because of the steep slopes of the foothills through which they fall. The larvae occur along finite stretches of these watercourses, never throughout their length (2,3). Large numbers of such larval habitats are scattered about the area endemic for onchocerciasis. Large-scale application of larvicides is extremely difficult under these circumstances, it being very hard to transport and apply appropriate materials. The rugged terrain precludes the use of motor vehicles, which are employed in Africa to combat S. damnosum (4). And since the elimination of simuliid larvae is a protracted process, it is imperative to find an effective application method that will also make

Chitosan nanocapsules of tarragon essential oil with low cytotoxicity and long-lasting activity as a green nano-larvicide
Frequent use of synthetic larvicides has led to the development of resistance in many species of mosquitoes as well as risk of environmental pollution. Recently, encapsulating essential oils (EOs) in surfactants or polymers is being employed as an approach to control the volatility of EOs as green larvicides. In this research, components of tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus) essential oil were id...
متن کامل4) Preliminary Report of Japan-Guatemala Onchocerciasis Control Pilot Project
In 1915 Dr. R. Robles became the first to record American onchocerciasis from Guatemala, where it is accordingly called “Robles’ Disease”. He assumed that the vectors would prove to be blackflies and recommended that nodulectomy would be the effective treatment. Since his discovery, both original research and experimental trials concerning treatment and control measures have been carried out in...
متن کاملProcedures for the evaluation of field efficacy of slow-release formulations of larvicides against Aedes aegypti in water-storage containers.
In Thailand, water-storage jars, barrels, drums, pails, and tanks constitute vast developmental sites for Aedes aegypti in urban, semiurban, and rural areas. Earthen water jars, cement jars, and concrete tanks constitute the greatest proportion of artificial containers where Ae. aegypti breed. This species is a major vector of the causal agents of dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever, and vector...
متن کاملSusceptibility of Simulium damnosum complex larvae to temephos in the Tukuyu onchocerciasis focus, southwest Tanzania.
Tukuyu onchocerciasis focus was earmarked for vector control using insecticide against larval stages. Susceptibility tests of mature larvae of Simulium damnosum s.l. vectors to temephos insecticide were carried out before and after two years of insecticide treatment of rivers within Tukuyu onchocerciasis focus, south-western Tanzania. The tests were done in 1999/2000 and 2004 using WHO standard...
متن کاملControl of Aedes aegypti with temephos in a Buenos Aires cemetery, Argentina.
The efficacy of a larvicide, temephos, for controlling Ae. aegypti was evaluated in a cemetery in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Breeding sites decreased from 18.4% in the first study period (Nov 1998 to May 1999, without temephos) to 2.2% in the second period (Nov 1999 to May 2000, two applications), and to 0.05% in the third one (Nov 2000 to May 2001, five applications). Ovitraps with eggs decrease...
